How to Replace a 20×20×1 Air Filter
Square 20×20×1 filters often live in a wall or ceiling return grille. They clog just like furnace-slot filters — and a dirty grille filter still starves the whole system.

What to do
1. Open the return grille
Most grille doors hinge or lift off. Support the filter so it does not dump dust into the duct.
2. Swap in a new 20×20×1
Arrow points into the duct (toward the furnace). Close the grille fully so it latches.
Stop and call a pro when
- Grille screws strip or the duct boot is crushed
- Multiple returns need balancing
